Judgment on January 6, 2009: No company made an official bid to buy the struggling Internet-based brokerage firm E*Trade in 2008, which the community correctly predicted. -- The Industry Standard
Original prediction: "Many suggest E*Trade could be a great buyout target, either for a healthier discount rival such as Ameritrade or a more traditional rival like Bank of America (BAC). Its recognizable brand and well-regarded technology make E*Trade a tempting target." - BusinessWeek.
This is a prediction that E*Trade will be offered an acquisition proposal (Ameritrade, Bank of America, or anyone else) by the end 2008.

E*Trade may seek federal aid
Although it seems likely for consolidation in the brokerage industry, this is not likely in the remaining time in 2008 (especially federal aid is granted).
E-Trade still waiting on TARP funds. Unfavorable judgment can now be rendered.
